The Three BIG Reasons NOT to Set Goals

Don’t set goals. I know. It sounds crazy for a business coach to say that. But let me share with you the Three BIG Reasons Why Your Goals (probably) Suck.

Reason 1: The Ticking Time Bomb of Failure

Like most people, you (probably) set goals that are like ticking time bombs of failure. You set goals that are too big, and you give yourself too little time to achieve them. And when you fail at them, you berate yourself. Now you’re unmotivated to take on new challenges.

Reason 2: The Giant Ball of Stress

Your goals are (probably) giant balls of stress. You use them as blunt instruments. Beating yourself over the head with them until you either achieve them or become so exhausted you give up. Again, now you’re unmotivated to take on new challenges in the future.

Reason 3: You’re Addicted!

You (probably) use goals like a drug addict uses heroin. You put all this strain and torture into reaching your goal, and when you do, you feel great! For about 10 seconds. And then the drug wears off. And you’re right back to set another stressful goal just to score your high.

The Good News: My Solution.

But the good news is, I have a solution. Any time you set a goal for yourself, immediately cut it in half. Then give yourself twice as much time to achieve it. Want to lose 10 pounds in a month? Great! Make it five pounds in two months. Rather than beat yourself up, you’ll build momentum. Making small goals that are easy to achieve will carry you into new success after new success. When you go easy on yourself and stay committed, the achievements you want will come faster and more fun without ever having to set another goal.
